“Ode to The Book Review”… Readers? How Come You Won’t Leave a Review When Done Reading a Book?

Welcome Avid Readers. Authors, and All-New visitors,

As a book marketer and promoting many fine authors, the biggest thing that eludes ALL AUTHORS, WRITERS, and Marketers … WHY DON’T A READER LEAVE A BOOK REVIEW?

Seriously. I really want to know what the reason is. If you are an AVID Reader, then you know how important a book review is for a writer who hards very hard on their craft and then to have the audacity to publish their work …

AND IS WHY a book review for us is so important. Be it a good, bad, or indifferent, book reviews are a way readers can let writers know how and why they loved a read or …not so much. It offers us, as writers, maybe some corrective advice if say a good mystery was missing elements or maybe the ending could have been better.

So, I came across a few book blogs that had some good advice and shared feelings of WHY books reviews are so important and thought I’d share them. As readers, I hope it will help all my readers who visit to understand the “WHY”…  *CAT*

<<<<<<,

Hello, readers!

Remember, you don’t have to purchase my books from Amazon to leave a rating or review. If you were gifted any one book, downloaded them for free, bought them, found them in a Little Library, found them at a rest area, at a mall, some other random place, etc… You can still leave a rating. I encourage and ask that you do so, regardless of how you received any copies. If you really enjoyed my books, let me know. My main concern is how well you liked my stories, not how much I can make.

Ratings and reviews really help. It helps other readers know that they are getting a good read, and it also helps me, the Author. When I see how much someone enjoyed one of my books, it reminds me why I’m doing this in the first place. I want you to have a new literary universe that you can lose yourself in after you had a long, frustrating, or busy day.

So, go ahead and leave a rating or review at AmazonGoodreadsBarnes & NobleBooks A Million, etc. You don’t have to post much more than two or three words if you don’t want to. Even just a star rating will do. After that, you can follow me on my many social media platforms.

Thanks, and I as all authors appreciate the time you spent reading our books and reading this post!

A SAMPLE OF HOW TO WRITE A QUICK BOOK REVIEW:

Since most reviews are brief, many writers begin with a catchy quip or anecdote that succinctly delivers their argument. But you can introduce your review differently depending on the argument and audience. The Writing Center’s handout on introductions can help you find an approach that works.

In general, you should include:

  • The name of the author and the book title and the main theme.
  • Relevant details about who the author is and where he/she stands in the genre or field of inquiry. You could also link the title to the subject to show how the title explains the subject matter.
  • The context of the book and/or your review. Placing your review in a framework that makes sense to your audience alerts readers to your “take” on the book. Perhaps you want to situate a book about the Cuban revolution in the context of Cold War rivalries between the United States and the Soviet Union. Another reviewer might want to consider the book in the framework of Latin American social movements. Your choice of context informs your argument.
  • The thesis of the book. If you are reviewing fiction, this may be difficult since novels, plays, and short stories rarely have explicit arguments. But identifying the book’s particular novelty, angle, or originality allows you to show what specific contribution the piece is trying to make.
  • Your thesis about the book.

Summary of content:

This should be brief, as analysis takes priority. In the course of making your assessment, you’ll hopefully be backing up your assertions with concrete evidence from the book so some summary will be dispersed throughout other parts of the review.

The necessary amount of summary also depends on your audience. Graduate students, beware! If you are writing book reviews for colleagues—to prepare for comprehensive exams, for example—you may want to devote more attention to summarizing the book’s contents. If, on the other hand, your audience has already read the book—such as a class assignment on the same work—you may have more liberty to explore more subtle points and to emphasize your own argument. See our handout on summary for more tips.

Analysis and evaluation of the book:

Your analysis and evaluation should be organized into paragraphs that deal with single aspects of your argument. This arrangement can be challenging when your purpose is to consider the book as a whole, but it can help you differentiate elements of your criticism and pair assertions with evidence more clearly. You do not necessarily need to work chronologically through the book as you discuss it.

Given the argument you want to make, you can organize your paragraphs more usefully by themes, methods, or other elements of the book. If you find it useful to include comparisons to other books, keep them brief so that the book under review remains in the spotlight. Avoid excessive quotation and give a specific page reference in parentheses when you do a quote. Remember that you can state many of the author’s points in your own words.

Conclusion:

Sum up or restate your thesis or make the final judgment regarding the book. You should not introduce new evidence for your argument in the conclusion. You can, however, introduce new ideas that go beyond the book if they extend the logic of your own thesis.

This paragraph needs to balance the book’s strengths and weaknesses in order to unify your evaluation. Did the body of your review have three negative paragraphs and one favorable one? What do they all add up to? The Writing Center’s handout on conclusions can help you make a final assessment.

IN THE REVIEW:

Finally, a few general considerations:

  • Review the book in front of you, not the book you wish the author had written. You can and should point out shortcomings or failures, but don’t criticize the book for not being something it was never intended to be.
  • With any luck, the author of the book worked hard to find the right words to express her ideas. You should attempt to do the same. Precise language allows you to control the tone of your review.
  • Never hesitate to challenge an assumption, approach, or argument. Be sure, however, to cite specific examples to back up your assertions carefully.
  • Try to present a balanced argument about the value of the book for its audience. You’re entitled—and sometimes obligated—to voice strong agreement or disagreement.

But keep in mind that a bad book takes as long to write as a good one, and every author deserves fair treatment. Harsh judgments are difficult to prove and can give readers the sense that you were unfair in your assessment.

  • A great place to learn about book reviews is to look at examples. The New York Times Sunday Book Review and The New York Review of Books can show you how professional writers review books.

New Literature Approved and Listy Book Review for “Murder Among The Tombstones” by Kim Carter.

……

Valerie Cotnoir    FictionMysterySuspense

Synopsis:

Clara and Iris, two sweet elderly ladies in their seventies, have been best friends almost their entire lives. Both widowed, they try retirement and decide there’s too much time in a day to waste on knitting and watching television. So, naturally, they start their own private investigation. Then there’s Detective Pitts and his best bud, Detective Nettles, who actually solve crimes—to be specific, murders. When a horrific murder case forces these two unlikely pairs to cross paths, the detectives may find the old ladies have more help to offer than they would have thought.

I received this book from the author for the purpose of this review. All comments and opinions are entirely my own.

Review:

From the beginning, I loved the idea of two old ladies starting their own detective agency. So you could say I was hooked before I even opened the novel. And, for the most part, it was everything I’d hoped it would be. I loved all the main characters: polite and reserved Clara, spicy and naïve Iris, responsible Quita, hot-tempered Detective Nettles and dedicated Detective Pitts. Even the side characters (and there were many of them) each had distinct traits so that I was almost immediately intrigued after each introduction.

One element about Murder Among the Tombstones I loved was Carter’s writing style. I learned several new words thanks to her unique vocabulary. And there’s something about the setting and flow of the story that feels so warm and inviting and hard to put down. The dialogue felt very realistic and I found myself laughing out loud several times over Iris’s antics.

As for the mystery, I was immediately pulled in. The main murder case was horrifying and it soon became clear it was a serial killer. About halfway through the book, we entered the heads of the murderer and his latest victim. I was disgusted by the murderer’s thoughts and dying to know who he was. It was clear to me that he was a psychopath based on the way he handled his victims. And, of course, I’m hoping beyond hope that his latest victim will escape unscathed.

But this wasn’t the only mystery we were trying to solve. There was also another involving a drug gang, a crazy pregnant lady, several shootings and more that Detectives Pitts and Nettles got deeply involved in. So between that and the murder case, I was itching to find out how these two cases related and how they were going to be resolved.

Honestly, I was racing toward the finish line. I had a few guesses as to who our murderers could be and I was more than ready for the big reveal.

And that’s when the excitement ended for me. Detective Pitts, while thinking about the drug gang case, suddenly somehow put two and two together and “figured out” who the murderer was in the other case. He did some research to confirm his suspicions and approached the criminal before having him arrested. Boom. Done.

……
imageedit_1_5428446624

……
,,,,,,,,

First of all, I was a bit confused how he connected the dots. What about the murderer was suspicious to him to start researching his background? As for the actual murderer…I feel completely betrayed. For starters, what about his latest victim? Why wasn’t he searching frantically for her? But most disappointing of all, he ended up being just some random dude introduced a couple chapters before. How on earth was I supposed to figure that out? Which I guess is just it: there was no way. So not only was the actual arrest anti-climatic and not only was he someone I’d just met, but when he explained why he’d killed the young girls, he just sounded like a guy with a hot temper rather than a cool, calculating psychopath. Which leaves me feeling even more confused about his motives.

As for Clara and Iris’ investigation, it ended in a similar way. They caught two characters red-handed (characters we’d just met a few chapters before!) and while they were involved in the crime, it was in an aspect I wasn’t even aware I should be curious about. Then, come to find out they did it because of some sad backstory. It was an interesting move, but I felt completely detached because again, I’d just met them. I think it was supposed to be a plot twist, but I was not even aware these characters existed, let alone that there was more than one aspect to the murders to consider.

And then it ended. Just like that. Clara and Iris didn’t discuss the results with the victim’s surviving sister. And the other drug gang case just sort of flopped and there was no discussion over that either. After laughing and gasping with these characters and flipping pages fiercely to the conclusion, I was left feeling completely jipped.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, it’s hard for me to say how I really feel about this book. Because I loved it up until the last two chapters. But when I reflect on it as a whole, I feel disappointed and confused. After some consideration, though, I decided to give Murder Among the Tombstones 4 out of 5 stars. I would say the story and characters up until the ending is worth a 5 and the conclusion worth a 4, so I think 4 is the happy medium. One thing to keep in mind is that there is a lot of harsh language and some mature content.

Surprisingly, it didn’t bother me as much as it normally would because the cursing fit the characters who used it and sometimes added some humor to the dialogue. That being said, I would recommend this book to high schoolers and up. Real page-turner!

CAT’S REVIEW of The Perils of Autumn: 5-STARS!

LOVE …Be careful what you wish for.

Be ready to delve into a beautiful world of horse country and Famous State that holds the yearly Kentucky Derby in this exceptionally written romance suspense drama. Rusty pulled out all the stops for this fantastic story, and I can easily see it played out on The Big Screen!

Rusty writes in a way that connects you to her vibrant characters of Autumn, Duff an amazing horse jockey, and many others that make up the cast of characters to bring the story to life. With just the right amount of intensity and dynamics of how love and relations unfold and play out between people when there are dark secrets and deceptions past and present when after Autumn graduates from nursing school and is sent to her employment as she arrives at the beautiful estate of Landon Lawn Stables and The Meadows.

This tells me two things, the first is my working for and with him in marketing his books is working! Lol. And second, avid readers are really enjoying his books! So here is a little more about him and about his amazing books everyone will ENJOY …

Amazon Review – 5 Stars!

Cat Lyon
5.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming, Wisdom, and Funny Stories …

December 13, 2018 – Format: Paperback

I was honored and privy to receiving an early copy of this “Gem” before it released by the author …

What a beautiful treasure trove of wisdom filled heartwarming nuggets in this book! “Wisdom From A Father offers a little bit of everything about life from the heart of a faithful father and now a grandfather, as told by an uplifting storyteller and the Author, Joe Siccardi.

His writing style is flawless as he shares about marriage, raising his children, and now his grandchildren, with many life and spiritual lessons. Tales set and laid out in little story essays with both purpose and reason through aspects of life humor, sadness, loss, meaningful, spiritual and touching.

Not to spoil any of what is offered to the reader, some of my favorite essays are ‘MAD MAX,’ ‘FATHER SAYS which opens the book, and ‘Miracle.’ I really enjoyed them all. Many have faith lessons as well, but not to an extreme. This book will be appreciated and enjoyed by all!

Moreover, I think especially for those men who are now new dads who will get a glimpse of what “Fatherhood” is going to be all about and how life events and “oh, just the little things” about raising your children at times can be both challenging and humorous too.

The most “touching” you will read is the beautiful memories of Karen … I won’t say much more about this but to say … Do yourself a favor readers; DO NOT hesitate to read this one. I highly suggest this one to everyone …

Amazon Rave Reviews:

January 12, 2019
<<<<

Though Heaven Shining Through is a shorter read, it is packed full of wisdom about both life and love.

Highlights:

The Narration
Though the majority of the book is told in a flashback of Samantha’s life up until mid-adulthood, the story never hits a boring spot. I devoured this book in one sitting. It is extremely rare for me to enjoy a book that relies on telling more than showing through actions or dialogue, but the author has a true gift for storytelling. He completely captured his characters’ unique traits and weaved a tale I won’t soon forget.

The Romance
The romance involves an unmarried couple who end up giving in to lust after remaining pure for a year of dating. The couple soon realizes that they should get married instead of continuing on in lust, so they begin their lives together in a way that honors God. The main character, Samantha, and her husband, Chad, have great chemistry and were adorable to read about. My favorite aspect about the romance was that it is portrayed realistically, as many Christian novels sugarcoat the fact that even Christians slip up and give in to sexual temptation before marriage. The novel emphasizes that we can find redemption in Christ no matter what our pasts hold, and that’s a message we need more of in Christian literature instead of judging couples for the slightest things or touches.

Relationship Between Samantha and Her Mom
The author perfectly portrays a criticizing mother and how damaging that can be on a child. Samantha and her mother have a strained relationship from the beginning, and it shapes Samantha’s decisions growing up. This is a fantastic reminder to Christian parents not to be so caught up on what a child is doing wrong that they forget to see what the child is doing right.

Overall, I applaud the author for tackling these subjects. Again, we definitely need bolder Christian authors in the industry. Highly Suggest this one!

Samantha and her mother do not have the best of relationships. This is a fast-paced story that gives the reader a sudden and deep romance, a deep loss of a husband, the journey of grief for Samantha and her kids, and then later, a last-minute relationship with her mother.

I loved this story. The romance of Chad and Samantha was beautiful. The loss she faces tore my heart out. The ending and the relationship she builds with her mother bringING this book a tender ending. I will be honest and say I was bawling for about half of this book. It is so well written and so touching I couldn’t help but shed the tears. The relationship between Samantha and her mom hits home with me deeply. I can relate greatly to her and her feelings as a young girl and later on in life as a mother.

Overall, this book was short and very heart-wrenching. People need to read this but don’t forget the tissues.    ~Boundless Book Reviews Stormi

One More Amazing Review For”Heaven:”

4 out 5-stars: Jan. 10th, 2019 –
By: Nay Denise reviewed Heaven Shining Through

Emotional and Beautiful
This was a great read.

I enjoyed Samantha and seeing her life. She dealt with hardships at home, fell in love with a guy unexpectedly and was blessed with 2 beautiful kids. Samantha is a strong woman who pushed through all the loses. She may not have focused on God, but you could see Him working in her life and focusing on her. Chad was an awesome guy from start to finish to Samantha. He always did right and apologized even when he did nothing wrong. Samantha’s father was a loving man. Samantha’s mother was a hard woman.

There were times I wanted to jump through the page and pop her upside the head, but as the ending drew near I began to love her. She may have been cold to Samantha, but her heart was pure. Wish she showed it more. I adored JR and Kate-D — they were amazing kids and seemed to have grown into phenomenal adults towards the end. This story brought tears to my eyes and made me smile. Totally recommend this. Great one-sitter read that will leave you with a warm feeling in your heart.

“Five Star Trilogy.”

Five Star Review on Amazon By Bailey

After reading all three of these novels, I don’t think there is a novel this author could write that I wouldn’t read. Even if I didn’t like the subject matter, I’m sure I would still read her books because she is such a fantastic writer. This is what made this books so special and such page turners… the author’s writing.
But I do not want to shortchange the story, the world the author built in these books. The story of Lara and Simone and the cast of other characters, was simply dazzling and wild.

My only disappointment was finishing this book and anxiously awaiting this author’s next book. Hoping it won’t be long.

Through book one keeps you enthralled into then the backstory as Simone goes through all the journals in book two of “Lara’s Journal.” But book three? What a roller coaster ride of mishaps, circumstances, murder, and oh poor ‘Simone’ has been through more than one person could ever manage!

I never spoil a good read, that said, the author has seasoned her writing chops in the finale of this “Must Read Trilogy.” The author has a way of weaving in spicy steamy romance, sex, thrills, and suspense with loads of twists and turns all the while touching on topics like mental illness, psychiatry, sexual behaviors, and more interesting issues.

That is what makes this series unique and keeps you pulled in until the last page and exceptional plot and storyline. I think the end of this book’s description should really be at the VERY BEGINNING: “Fasten your seatbelts before you embark on this roller coaster, and prepare for the most unpredictable end.” Absolutely True!!

I Highly Suggest All Three Books As Book Three Is Now My Favorite … Cat Lyon

The Brilliant Game (Hidden Motives Book 3) by A. Gavazzoni hits the nail on the head with regard to mental illness. I have a mental illness and have been dealing with it for twenty-six years. This book gives the naked truth. It does not sugarcoat it. It truly gives you an understanding of the battles mentally ill people have to fight. It is not always roses and unicorns when dealing with a mental illness. The book has hot, R-rated sex. That does not bother me. Who am I to judge someone? Only God can do that.

Another beautiful thing is how real this novel feels.

I would recommend reading this series in order. In each book, the author widens the reader’s knowledge of mental illness. Also, the development of the characters is woven beautifully into this series. I received this book free for review. Kudos to the author for her understanding and kindness toward people like me who have a mental illness, for how she makes the story come alive, and for the suspense she brings to her books. These are the reasons I give this book five stars.

This was a good read. The simultaneous plot line between Lara’s journal and Simone’s real-life make it very interesting. There is a lot of sexual content which makes it a mature read, but adds to the fun.

Plus, by the end of this book, there are a number of surprises that surfaced to add to the it’s impact. I was very pleased.

How To Get Book Reviews As A First Time Published Author ~

Hello Readers, Authors, and Writers. Welcome, New Friends.

As a first time published author, I know how difficult it is getting a reader to place a book review on Amazon, Goodreads, and even on Barnes & Noble when they are done reading your book. Why is that? One reason I know for my book, it is an off-genre type of book. It is a memoir, but some of the sharing is about when I was tangled in a gambling addiction and alcohol, and finally recovery. Some readers don’t care reading about addictions.

So it makes a tougher book to not only promote and build a readership but also to get readers who do read it, to go back and place a book review! So when I came across this exceptional and informative writing blog last summer run by Best Selling  Author, Joanna Penn of The Creative Pen, I wanted to share it with all my author friends here.

How To Get Book Reviews As An Unknown Author

“A few months ago, I started a new pen-name and have kept it secret in order to avoid ‘pollution’ of the also-bought. But it has been SO hard because I have basically started from scratch – with no email list, no street team, no reviews, no platform, no social media.”

The pen-name is slowly gathering steam, but it reminds me how hard it is starting out and getting those first reviews can be one of the hardest things.

As an unknown author, getting Amazon reviews for your book is crucial to unlocking its full potential. But it’s not as easy as it sounds.

False Assumptions

You might think that downloads lead to Amazon reviews.

They don’t.

You might not know if Amazon has restrictions on reviews.

They do.

You might think reviews will eventually start rolling in with enough time and word of mouth.

They won’t.

It’s easy to get discouraged. You might think it’s impossible for an unknown author publishing their first book to get any traction with Amazon reviews.

It isn’t.

A Tale of Four Books

During the 2015 Ravi Zacharias International Ministries Summer Institute in Atlanta, I met the renown scholar and Christian apologist Os Guinness. He had just released Fool’s Talk: Recovering the Art of Christian Persuasion.

Also in attendance was the author and apologist Ravi Zacharias whose book Why Suffering? Finding Meaning and Comfort When Life Doesn’t Make Sense was released in October the previous year.

And in October of 2014, John MacArthur, one of the most influential preachers of all time, released Parables: The Mysteries of God’s Kingdom Revealed Through the Stories Jesus Told.

OOTF reviewsSo how is my first book One of the Few: A Marine Fighter Pilot’s Reconnaissance of the Christian Worldview—self-published as an unknown author around the same time–different from the traditionally published works of these three powerhouses in the field of Christian apologetics?

Mine has more Amazon reviews.

I’m not trying to brag. These men are my heroes, and their books are a million times better than mine.

So how is that possible?

Today I want to share with you exactly how I did it.

Isn’t It Simple?

Okay, here’s the answer: assemble a street team with 300 advance readers for your book launch and expect about 100 Amazon reviews during launch week.

See? Wasn’t that simple?

No. It’s terribly difficult for the unknown author without the right knowledge and tools.

After the initial launch of One of the FewI had thousands of downloads but under 30 Amazon reviews.

And I know how important it is to get reviews. They’re one of the most influential factors in whether or not someone is going to decide to download your book. They might mean the difference between getting a BookBub or not. And they’re definitely part of the formula for tripping Amazon’s algorithm—the ultimate arbiter of the Amazon author have and have-nots!

What I Didn’t Know

During the pre-launch phase, I tried to reach out to as many people as I could to provide them with a free copy for review consideration, but I had three problems:

  • I didn’t know whom to look for.
  • I didn’t know where to find them.
  • I didn’t know how to connect with them.

What I Learned

Then three things changed when I joined a mastermind group for authors.

  1. I found out how to identify the perfect reader for my book.
  2. I discovered new tools to help me find them.
  3. I learned how to connect with them effectively.

I decided to re-attack my campaign for seeking Amazon reviews, and in a matter of months, my review count surpassed 150.

The new technique worked so well, I decided I had to write a book and share it with other authors.

Every Author Starts Out Unknown

You might be a rockstar writer with a rock star past writing rockstar books. But the book review scene might have your head banging.

You might have a Ph.D. and teach at a university with peer-reviewed articles. But your Amazon reviews aren’t making the grade.

You might be the former CEO of a million-dollar company. But in terms of book reviews, you’re bankrupt.

Unless you’re no-kidding famous, everyone starts out as an unknown author.

And when you are an unknown author, reviews do not come on their own! At least not in significant numbers. You must be extremely intentional about getting them.

Following Amazon’s Rules

But you also have to follow Amazon’s rules, and they made some significant changes over the years. Here are some highlights:

Amazon “will continue to allow the age-old practice of providing advance review copies of books.”

However, “Book authors and publishers may continue to provide free or discounted copies of their books to readers, as long as the author or publisher does not require a review in exchange or attempt to influence the review.”

Additionally, you cannot offer a review in exchange for:

  • cash
  • a free or discounted product
  • a gift certificate
  • a discount off a future purchase provided by a third party
  • entry into a contest or sweepstakes or membership in a program

What Can You Do?

You can provide a free copy and ask readers to consider leaving a review, including that fact that you’re willing to accept both positive and negative reviews and that they will be under no obligation.

So in order to get a significant number of reviews, you must identify large groups of people interested in reading your book, connect with all of them, make them want to leave a book review, and do so without requiring a review or attempting to influence the review.

(Phew!)

Sound impossible? It’s not. It’s an art that I’ve been working on for some time, and I want to share what I’ve learned.

Steps You Should Take

I’ve broken it down into a 5-step process. This is what you need to do when planning your book review campaign:

  1. Identify your perfect book reviewer
  2. Find large groups of them online
  3. Find their personal websites
  4. Prepare a spreadsheet
  5. Connect with them personally

Step 1. Identify Your Perfect Book Reviewer

You’ve probably heard about contacting book review bloggers about reading your book for review consideration. But there are some specific things to look for that will increase your chances of having your book received and reviewed.

You want to make sure they enjoy reading books in your genre.

Even better, you should look for reviewers that have other things in common with you. For instance, you’re both from the northwest. Or you both love a good Netflix binge on the weekend. (Keep this information handy. You’re going to use it later.)

Step 2. Find Large Groups of Them Online

With a bit of creativity, you can find large groups of your perfect book reviewer online. A Google search for “book review bloggers” is good, but a search for “search by blogger” is even better. That’s because what will benefit you the most is not to find a book review or blogger website–it’s to find lists of book reviews or blogger websites.

Sometimes instead of a list, you might find links to book review blogger websites on multiple pages. These can be turned into a list of web extraction tools like Import.IO.

[From Joanna: You can also use Author Marketing Club’s automated Book Reviewer Grabber Tool]

Step 3. Find Their Personal Websites

Sometimes a search will lead you to a single website with many book reviews. If that’s the case, find out if the reviews are by a handful of reviewers or many reviewers.

If it’s the latter, search for a link back to the review blogger’s personal blog. You want to visit their website so you can learn about them in order to make a personal connection later on.

Step 4. Prepare a Spreadsheet

Spreadsheet

You’re probably working on a timeline. Maybe you’ve set our book launch date and want to start contacting potential advance readers a few months prior. If that’s the case, you can front load all your review blogger research and then connect with them all at once at the desired time.

You’ll want to keep careful track of your research, and one way is to use a spreadsheet. Make columns for the review bloggers name, email address (or other platform contact details), and date contacted.

I also recommend including a column for you to record a bit of personal information you learned from visiting their website.

A spreadsheet will help you keep track of everyone who has responded and how long it’s been since your last contact with them. It will also help you avoid contacting someone you’ve already contacted before.

Step 5. Connect With Them Personally

Once you have your spreadsheet loaded with your perfect book review bloggers, it’s time to reach out.

There are many ways to do this including connecting on social media, contacting them through their website, or sending an email. Before you email, make sure you know and adhere to your country’s SPAM laws.

If you choose to email, there are tools like GMass that can help you merge your spreadsheet data with your Gmail account making it easy to send individual personalized emails in bulk.

Once bloggers start responding, take note of your most common responses to them and create a few Gmail “canned responses” to save you time responding in the future.

Before you know it, your inbox will start filling with “yes” emails.

You Can Do It

This might all sound like common sense, but it’s easier said than done, especially if you’ve never done it before. But there are tools and techniques out there to help you connect with book reviewers on the scale you need to make a difference. This kind of connecting is done by experienced authors and publishing houses alike. You can do it too.

And as an author with any hopes of getting a meaningful number of Amazon reviews, you must.
